Tribute to Emmanuel Adebayor
In what may have been his final season in Arsenal colors, Adebayor netted 16 goals and forged 6 assists in 34 appearances during one eventful season.
You may desire this man’s departure but remember his two main charms; Adebayor was a perfect penalty kick taker – never missing an attempt in the red and white, and for the most of events, when he scored in a match, the Gunners avoided defeat. Only on three occasions (all in 07/08 season) in his Arsenal career were matters otherwise.
Be careful what you wish for.

yes he may have fumbled last summer’s transfer saga.
but does that mean that as fans we cant forgive and stand by our players. i honestly believe it got to the point Adebayor couldnt be asked. and am sure we as fans who work daily would behave far worse in our various places of work if we felt we were never appreciated.

At this point I feel bad for the guy. He mishandled the summer. I get the sense he indicated to his agent that he ultimately wanted to stay at Arsenal but that he wanted a new deal. His agent told him that unless he publicly remained open to a move, he wouldn’t max out his deal. So he followed his agent’s advice. It was bad advice from a PR perspective and good from a contract perspective.
The PR problem became a big deal when he struggled with injuries and the team struggled with general. If he comes out scoring, the fans would forgive him. He was and is a much loved player because he plays, when healthy, with heart and passion. His injuries coupled with fatigue from recuperating from them made it look like he wasn’t trying hard enough. Also, his game is largely successful because he works so hard and I just don’t think he was physically able to do it.
The end of season interview was pitying. He looked very emotional to me and I felt very bad for the YOUNG MAN. He is a victim of his own PR problems from the summer, but he looks to me a like a guy that needs some love. I’d recommend he come out and say “Look. I’m staying at Arsenal until the end of my deal whether the fans like me or not. I’m going to pour every ounce of energy into helping the team win so long as I am physically able. I will not comment on anymore transfer stories.” Or he needs to put in a transfer request. This back and forth should not be allowed to continue. Wenger/Gadsikis should stop it.
In my opinion Adebayor is unsatisfied with what he has, he wants more and thats why he’s always flirting with AC Milan. Its like a husband constantly eyeing other sexy girls, thats disloyal. I like him as a player but he’s not contented so its better he goes, we can replace him. I would wish him to calm down and stay at least one more season though!
Adebayor is still a quality player. Despite his indifferent form this season, he is still one of the better striker in the Premier League. Some top European club(AC Milan, Barca, Inter, Chelsea etc) still recognized his quality as one of top striker. I believe he should be clear of himself to where he wants to go next season. I personally feel that he is still useful to us but….whether his heart is still with us.
By the way, nice work on the video. It shows how important Adebayor can be at times to the team and how close he was to having a much more productive season despite the injuries. We never had the chance to see him play with Arshavin. That’s a real shame that I hope is rectified next season.
Only a month ago he stated that he talks to the milan vice-president often:
“I often speak to Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani on the phone because he is very good at French as his wife is from Morocco,” Adebayor told Italian newspaper Tuttosport. “Galliani may not be as sexy as Beyonce, but Milan are.
“For now I just want to finish the season on a high, but then we will see. My agent Stephane Courbis is in London with his Italian associate Vincenzo Morabito and they are always working day and night.”
Does that sound like a guy that wants to stay with us this season- NO.
Oh and of his 16 goals, how many games did he score in- 6 or 7 maybe out 34 games. He scored 2 or 3 goals in games that were mostly routs. Im sorry but scoring goals in 1 every 5-6 games is awful for striker, nevermind his lazy demeanour and tendency to stand 10 yards offside constantly.
Yes, he’s a good player but he doesn’t want to play for us anymore, so stop making excuses for him and accept that he wants to leave.
I completely disagree with you guys.I Think Ade is crap.We need a leathal finisher.Ade does score but he needs a million chances to score a goal and he isn’t always going to get that many,especially against the big clubs.If Wenger does not sell him and buy someone else,it will ruin my summer
I am all for Obafemi Martins to replace Adebayor should he leave us for other clubs. Martins is strong, high work rate and a good finisher. Best of all, he is used to the English Premier League style of play which is usually fast and furious.

Do you really think Adebayor gets more chances to score in an average season than Torres, or Rooney or Ronaldo? Including this season where we had to play like ten matches with no creative midfielder? I think not. How many chances did Ronaldo have to kill off Barca during the final match, and why havent Manure called for his head.
Also realistically any other striker you bring in will need time to settle in, and why sell a tested striker and begin experimenting with a new one next season when we need silverware.

If we sign Obafemi martins, you can forget headed goals. We will have Bendtner as our only striker above 5′10.

I started to read some of the replies and i for some unknown reason started to be convinced but then woke up and remembered his behaviour at the euros organising his own press confrences for what?
it showed me he is not loyal because he scored 30 goals all of a sudden hes a superstar and then banging on for a new deal cause of that one season and now look where are the 30 goals that your new contract had been justifed by. He is not as good as people think if you watch him closely he can be a hand full but a clumsy hand full is no where near clinical enough and off side should be his middle name the stats dont lie. All in all i think he should be sold the only reason not to sell is cause it would seem like we are a selling club and the replacement would need time to settle in.

ozed, although Oba Martins may not be as tall as Ade or Bendtner, he had scored some beautifully headed goals for Newcastle. This guy can really out jump tall defenders at times.
I like where you’re coming from – so top marks for the effort. But mate you are a bit off the mark. Ade is a good striker – when he wants to be. He can be awesome and he can also be the most frustrating player on the pitch. In his first couple of years Ade showed what he can do then we rewarded him with a fat contract and he let the hype go to his head. He then even decided to blatantly lie to the fans about not wanting to ever leave Arsenal. I don’t mind Ade but he certainly isn’t the best striker we’ve ever had but he has got the minerals to be a top top player – but he believes in his own hype and is a lazy shadow player of what we Gooners were hoping for after seeing him – especially after last season.
I hear you on the tribute and be careful what you wish for – but I couldn’t run a tribute on a player who when summer comes around including this one talks about other clubs and doesn’t come and say “I love Arsenal -I am staying – fuck these other clubs sniffing around’”
More to the point – I don’t think we should be careful what we wish for – because if Ade does go to a Barca or an AC Milan – he’ll have just one season – maybe two at the most to win over the president, the manager and the fans..
Also I really believe – most quality strikers given the service our team provides can score a sackful of goals so i wouldn’t worry on that score. Although a different player – Eduardo knows how to score and doesn’t need to be asked twice… In fact when Eduardo is in front of goal and misses – we’re more surprised than anything else.
I cant believe a couple of pple are talkin about signin obafemi martins, when we got way better strikers out there..Eto, Edin, villa, Hunterlaar, Tevez, Santa cruz, Benzema, etc..we need a world class striker if we have to replace Ade..

I still choose to believe that Adebayor is a good striker. His game suffered at the later stage becos he allowed success to get into his head. If only he remains level headed and continues work hard, he will be spoken of with the likes of Drogba, Torres, Kaka and etc.
one interesting thing also is the shots on targert, blocked, off target, % shots on target. arshavin is most precise and van p is most inaccurate. Van p has also the most shots off target this season. most of the typical shit said against ade is not supported by the facts e.g misses alot, needs more chances than others etc. the one thing everyone got spoton about his play is the amount of offsides 43!!!!! thats high at almost 2wice a game this season
I look at it from the other angle -
Sure Adebayor is a good player, but imagine the sceniro if we once again find ourselves trailing by a goal or two in an important match against a big side like Man U or Chelsea, would u confident with Adebayor upfront we could turn the things around?
what disappointed me most though about Adebayor the past season is – at the past i was hughly impressed by his WORKRATE. He made Henry looked so lazy. Ade could run all day, all over the pitch.
Yet no longer we saw the same from him.
we can all imagine scenario’s but facts say that bendner played 31 games scored 9 and had 2 assists, van p played 28 scoring 11 goals and 10 assists. ade played 26 games scored 10 and 7 assists. those are the facts!! and as the author said “when he scored in a match, the Gunners avoided defeat. Only on three occasions (all in 07/08 season) in his Arsenal career were matters otherwise. ”
so the scenarios your dreaming of are few and far between when ade is in the team!

Lots of stats and opinions above. I actually thought we should have sold him last year and brought in Villa before the Euros. That is the truth so I am not jumping on any bandwagon. I actually think he is a good striker and will do well at the top level but I am not sure he is for us. I know people say he has pace, but it seems to me he has that type of pace once he is into his stride. I don’t feel he is quick over 10 metres from a more static position, or for want of a better word “nippy”. I feel that this short distance burst of pace is the most important for a top striker and especially at Arsenal where quick short incisive passes are fed into space.
The much recognised offside problem I also feels breaks down our play by handing posession back to the opposition. This is particularly a problem against top European sides who can retain posession for some time once you give it back to them.
Lastly I don’t feel he is great one on one with the keeper. We have not had that since Henry who had a high conversion rate, once one on one, if he was slipped in behind the defenders. A lot of players are mentioned but I watched a compilation of the Wolfsburg Bosnian fellow and what impressed me was that he seemed to get into the dangerous areas and finish off the close range goals but was also good when behind the defenders in a one on one with the keeper.
Mate in the prem ade in 86+18 apps he scored 46 goals amost a goal every other game!!
In the champs lg in 21+5 apps he scored 9 goals and in the FA cup he has 4+3 apps and 4 goals
in total he has 114+28 apps and 62 goals. go and have a look at berbatov and torres stats to appriciate how good these are.
Being a hater is one thing but you cant let hate cloud the facts which is we got a very very good player who is not the completed article and who can develop to be truly world class. Drogba was not at the same level at the same age and he out performs 30mill berbatov fact!!!

geeGunner. You really know you stats. Can you look at last season and compare him to Torres. If you take away penalties that were not won by either of them how many did they score in open play. I am also concerned that almost one fifth of the goals came in two hat-tricks against whipping boys Derby when we had the game won and the extra goals were not really required. I will stand corrected if ned be but I think Torres was by far the more prolific in open play and also has the ability to get goals in the big games regularly.
All good comment guys, great job. In my opinion i think Wenger already has Ade’s replacement in the bag and thats why he doesnt seem to be making great effort to keep him (e.g the comment at the shareholders meeting about being willing to sell to chelsea). Dont forget he’s a wily fox that Wenger!

Regarding what the press says, how come we are not asking for Wenger to be fired? Its more likely than not that he spoke to Real madrid. Also with the press whos to say what was actually said and what was imagined or embellished.
I say we get behind Ade and get another 30 goals next season. Who cares whether he likes us or not if he is scoring.

Being an African, if i were a talented footballer like Adebayor, i would never dream of leaving Arsenal because its one of the few places a black man can become a cult hero. So Adebayor if you want to be forgotten in a few years go to Italy or Spain, they will use you and when they are done they will racially abuse you like they do Samuel Eto, but if you want to be adored for all time give your all,show teh fans you want to belong, help land some trophies, get well paid and settle down. Then when you have retired you may feel you actually achieved something.

As I mentioned above I am still not certain about Ade for us but I recognise him as a good striker. Whether he is absolutely top class or can become that I don’t know. I don’t like the “he is crap” statements as he clearly isn’t. I feel we need a more clinical box predator but If he stays we must all get behind him, and then I would love to be proved wrong in feeling he cannot make the difference for us at the highest level in the top games.

Ade appears lazy, discontented and ‘want-away’. On the other hand without him, the team is very one-dimensional, nothing can be played long – do you remeber the season before he came – we could not break down teams with our possession football. He definitely gave us another outlet for goals.
If he does go, which is probably for the best at this stage, we need to get a big fella up front to replace him.

After watching that… You do not want this guy to go. He needs love like we all do. Lets stand by our man… I have a feeling he will be awesome next season. He is not a flash in the pan. I just don’t want him to prove that to us with another team. Lets support him but if he has another bad season that is down to not putting in enough then we have every right to call for his head. Because his mandate is to score goals with opportunities created and we know we can create opportunities by the bucket load…
We have every right to voice our opinions to our beloved club. I don’t know about some of you but as for me, it cost me a lot of money to watch each and every Arsenal game. We deserve the best from the Arsenals. We are in the mist of global economy crisis and some are losing their job by the day. I am not saying that we should win every single game but we expect good performances at the very least so don’t asked us to shut up!
You could make a fair argument that Ade should be given one more chance.
But if we keep him, and he spends another season not appearing to make much effort, it could easily cost Wenger his job.
Adebayor, no matter how good and talented he is but if his heart is not with Arsenal, he might as well leave. The same goes to Cesc Fabregas who still talk about linking himself with Barca.

Adebayor is an amazing player but like every other human being he is a person who has feelings.
he has incredible potential and charisma and ability to play football and definitely to score goals. nobody who scores 30 goals in a season can be considered bad. even though this season was definitely not as good, it was flooded by injury, completely unjust cards, a bad team atmosphere and constant criticism from the people who should be supporting him, us! arsenal fans, who should respect and appreciate what he has given us. every football player who has class will have to face decisions, especially when you’re getting an offer from huge clubs, especially when ex-team mates are trying to persuade you to leave.

Statisically Ade still scores more goals in less time (191min per goal) then Bendtner (which he should) but even V Persie with the second most amount of assists and this is with less appearances then either of the other 2.
