Thomas Vermaelen is an Arsenal player.

News that the Belgian defender has completed a move to Arsenal has been sensationally confirmed by the club after a reported fee of £10 million was coughed up for Vermaelen’s services.

After penning a four-year contract at the club worth £55,000-a-week, the player will now join up with his teammates when pre-season training begins later this month.

The 23-year-old who was skipper for former club Ajax racked up 143 appearances for the Dutch club after been recruited from Belgian side KFC Germinal Beerschot at the age of 18.

Vermaelen is very accustomed to experience in top-level football and has been an established member of the Belgium national side’s mold since his debut in 2006.

Arsene Wenger was highly delighted to land this defensive boost to his squad.

“Thomas is a great signing for Arsenal Football Club, and we are all delighted that he is joining us. Thomas is a solid performer with good experience of Champions League and UEFA Cup football and is also a regular with the Belgium national team.

    1st..lol…
yeah now that he sign lets see what he got to offer during the season,
to be honest would like toure n gallas to stay, djourou should stay too, silvestre shud stay just to provide mentoring to the like of djourou n song during cup game, n senderos if mr Wenger allow it, i take him my self to Fiorentina and ask for Melo in return n i dont mind paying the rest off the fee my self, with an instalment plan…lol…

  2. What a deal!!!!! who is giving way now?

  3. Erichero says:

Sounds like an excellent deal to me. He’s just starting to get into his strong years and his captaincy and international caps prove that he is more than just another young gun.

Nice to see Wenger committing to signing players in positions we know we need help.

  4. But we still need more Mr. Wenger. Buy us a destroyer in the middle of the park. pliz Bring Melo, then we rule the league

    Welcome vermaelen… and goodbye silvestre..

  6. Damn_Gallas says:

Hope we get another defender like bassong… I can foresee that toure is leaving… with city and their silly cash.. Arsenal has no reason to reject the deal, given that toure is near his “expiry date”. With Vermaelen and possibly bassong as well as djourou, we would have 3 young but experienced defender. However, I think that wenger should sign a defender that is capable of playing at CB and also at RB, as this allows cover for sagna if he is injured or if eboue is sold.

Hopefully the reports on fiorentina hoping to sign senderos is true so that we can swap with with Melo. Otherwise, i really hope wenger would step up the chase for mbia or matuidi. We really need one of these guys to play along side fabregas. That we would be world class.

Imagine a defence of Gallas, Vermaelen, Djourou, Bassong, Sagna, Gibbs, Clichy (Given that Toure, Senderos and Silvestre are all sold, even though I would be very happy to retain Toure).

Imagine a 5 man midfield with Melo and Song as our defensive shield, Fabregas in the center, Walcott/Nasri on the right and Arshavin, Rosikcy on the left. And with Eduardo, Bendtner, RvP, Vela as our attackers (given that adebayor is long gone and NO replacements are needed).

We would be world beaters. Bring on Real madrid and their CR and KaKa or maybe even Villa and Ribery… Bring on Barcelona and their Messi, Xavi, Iniesta, Eto’o and Henry. We the mighty arsenal would kick your arse from england all the way to spain and around the globe!!!

  7. Tonnyw says:

Well done Wenger. Get rid of gallas & adebayor, the poisonous seeds of our dressing room. Now get melo.

  8. citygunner says:

Well done wenger, what a clever signing. Now if you would sign one more def. mid., we would be guns blazing come next season.

    I smell good times ahead

  9. Here’s a thought though, when was the last time Wenger spent so much on a centre-back, and so early in the transfer season? Petit is the name that springs to mind. Maybe Arsene has different plans for Tom.

  10. LB says:

I also have the suspicion he plans to play Vermaelen in midfield. By all accounts he’s capable of playing there.

  11. sunny says:

Thank God Wenger now listened to people’s opinion. We need a hard man in d middle of the park. If possible bring back Flamini. Without a hard man, i won’t be surprise if we still end nxt season trophiless.

  12. tom says:

MELO MELO MELO buy him then we can challenge for all major trophys trust me!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  13. Arsenal we stand.a gd buy now we now need a hard tackling dm

  14. sunny says:

what is Adebayor & Gallas still doing in arsenal? Pls, if no club is coming for them, arsenal should for christ sake give them out free of charge to any club that are interested in the ciminals.

  15. toni says:

good catch, i don’t know about melo buut don’t get exited that fast maybee he is not the one we really need. we should look at other options; cana, muntari, inhler, de rossi(just a dream)

  16. 9ja Gunner says:

Good to have gotten the first deal out of the way. A defensive midfielder is our most pressing need now & i hope all the noise abt the Melo guy is real. From what I have seen in the Confederations Cup,we sure could use him.
