Report: Arsenal 1-3 Manchester Utd.
By Randy Osae
Arsenal surrendered Rome dreams and a long, proud unbeaten home record in Europe at the hands of a very poised Manchester United tonight.
Intentions of resurgence were undone within the initial 11 minutes of this second-leg courtesy of Park’s fluke and Ronaldo’s stunners. It was none more than a bitter reward to the rosy paid customers at the Emirates Stadium.
It will not be spring time in Rome for Arsenal who had looked destined for a return trip on their last visit.
Life must certainly go on, but the wait for silverware will also go on.
There was just something extraordinary about tonight from start to finish. Never had Arsenal been as self-assured in a build-up before. The Emirates Stadium was emulating the Anfields and San Siros.
Every attendant found a flag on his/her seat and as they waved them, famous chants were recited. It had the makings of a night at one of European football’s shrines.
The men on the pitch had even more adrenaline flowing through their bodies and Arsenal’s football was in fluid manner as well.
It resembled how United made use of comfort territory almost a week ago, but – for something Wenger’s men lacked that night – the mancunians rather had a sucker-punch in them.
On their first sniff at goal, Ronaldo provided an obliged cut-back into Arsenal’s area, and instead of dealing coolly, makeshift left-back Kierran Gibbs’ nerves got the better of him. He slipped, Park latched in and Almunia was haplessly beaten.
The Emirates was shell-shocked. Their once electrified voices were switched off and before Arsenal attempted to pick up the pieces, they were torn apart.
Van Persie fouled Ronaldo and from over 35 yards out, the Portuguese managed to let fly and bend his free-kick home.
All over 60,000 present – whether red devil or gooner – had been quietened by the unlikely outcomes of open play and of course, brilliance.
With only 15 minutes gone, Arsenal needed four goals to go through. But there were still badges hanging around reading; “Keep the faith”, and Rooney nearly made it mission impossible – if it had not already been – when he curled a shot on target for the low bottom corner only for Almunia’s finger tips to deny.
At this point, the majority including Wenger himself had been bemused. Their pondering faces spoke in volumes, but to be fair, the players might have hidden their distraught professionally.
Arsenal did not change their tempo with Robin van Persie seeming most desperate. Wenger went back to the drawing board at half-time and realized the occasion was too tense for the sake of young Gibbs and so Eboue stepped in.
The home side kept giving their all and as a result, were left bare at the back. Ronaldo warned once by testing Almunia down low and when he attempted again, Arsenal were humiliated again.
United counter-attacked Arsenal with Rooney the architect before Ronaldo finished off the art piece with a well-taken slot past Almunia.
Van Persie tried his best to keep Van der Sar busy, and Bendtner who had immediately replaced Walcott, hit the sidenetting also.
Arsenal were only chasing their dignity now and when Fabregas was thwarted by Fletcher in a goal-scoring opportunity, the Scot was sent off and Van Persie installed some respect on the score board – stabbing home the spot-kick.
Wenger sought more consolation as Vela replaced Arsenal’s only goal-scorer. With more numbers on the pitch but vastly decreasing in the stands, Arsenal dominated the late minutes but failed to replicate United’s early ruthlessness.
The dream was dead and gone for long, and so is the season.

Game over.
Game over.

Kidz – I might have never talked to you during this build-up but now you understand what “jinxing” is right?
I had never seen Wenger and arguably the whole squad and camp more confident about a game before.
This had to be the inevitable outcome.

Its so frustrating to give away 2 very soft goals.

I never fancied the Champions League (nor any trophy) this year.
All these semis were bonuses to me. And it has been well justified that it’s what this club settles for. Even Wenger insisted being semi-finalists in the FA Cup and UCL is enough at his press-conference yesterday. He certainly does not hate to loose as much as those paid customers at the Emirates do.

arsenal kids, they are not playing that bad…flowing passing, they have to push up so the long balls might get them…
just really unlucky on both goals.
I do have to admit they do look better than the 1st leg.

alright, poor attempt at some levity. apologies all.
perhaps this will be a wake up call to AW to make some changes, buy some players with heart.
will cesc stay … that is the question.
(with AA, would it be that big of a problem … another.)

hard to explain, but seems arsenal was never really in this game. looked nervy going in and lazy on the pitch.
at this point, emotions on our sleeves, don’t think its time to make any rash decisions or call-outs.
argghh, but this sucks.

i love how the fear is players will leave due to trophyless seasons. when, in fact, it is the PLAYERS’ fault it is another trophyless season. (granted, AW takes significant heat for the FA cup, no-AA debacle.)
here’s an idea – play with heart and urgency you lazy phuks. this is arsenal football, not friggin’ coed intercollegiate ball!

Wenger has no other options. With such squad to Semi in CL, it is already good enough. If only Arsenal provides 100m to buy some good players.
To sack Wenger is a very bad option, to be honest.

here are the game rating from goal.com
Player Ratings: Arsenal 1-3 Manchester United
Almunia -4.0: Was brilliant in the first leg, and kept Arsenal in the tie. Tonight, he ended any chance they had of making the final with a terrible error on Ronaldo’s free kick. Later saved well from Rooney and Ronaldo, but the damage was already done.
Sagna -6.0: Arsenal’s backline was shaky once again, but Sagna did not do anything terribly wrong. Committed as usual.
Toure -5.0: Solid for spells of the game, but was found wanting at key moments. Needed to be Arsenal’s defensive leader, but was not.
Djourou -5.0: When the much-maligned Mikael Silvestre is missed, then you know it has not been one of your better nights. No understanding whatsoever with Toure.
Gibbs -4.5: “He was magnificent in the first leg.” Almost everyone bizarrely said that after the first leg, apart from Goal.com colleague Sulmaan Ahmad and myself. Hate to be a told-you-so, but Gibbs cost Arsenal the tie tonight with a monumental slip for Park’s opener.
Walcott -4.5: A big disappointment in both legs. Made no impact whatsoever against Evra, and was far too one-dimensional. No space, no Walcott.
Song -5.0: Song is supposed to be a holding midfielder, but again he didn’t protect his defence. How Wenger could ever consider him a worthy replacement for Mathieu Flamini is a mystery.
Fabregas -6.0: Tried to put his foot on the ball and play, but it is quite clear that it is not the same Fabregas this season as the one of years gone by. Won the penalty.
Nasri -7.0: Easily Arsenal’s best player tonight. Was lively throughout, and looked capable of making things happening. Unfortunately did not have the support of his team-mates.
Van Persie -6.5 Along with Nasri, the only Arsenal player who showed any kind of spark. Unleashed a few shots, and scored his side’s consolation from the penalty spot.
Adebayor -4.0: Adebay-who? The most embarrassing 180 minutes of football you will ever see from a supposed centre forward. Nothing more to add.
Subs
Eboue -6.5: Judging on Eboue’s penetrating second half showing, he should have started the game.
Bendtner -6.0: A few lively moments, but nothing to get excited about.
Vela -N/V: Did not have a chance to get into the game.
MANCHESTER UNITED
Van der Sar -6.5: Another very easy evening for the veteran Dutchman. Aside from the penalty, the only save of note Van der Sar had to make was a 20-yard shot from Van Persie at 3-0.
O’Shea -6.5: The hero at Old Trafford, O’Shea was steady if not spectacular at the Emirates. Occasionally troubled by Nasri, the Irishman did almost all that was asked of him.
Vidic -7.5: Won everything in the air, and breezed through the evening without even having to get out of second gear.
Ferdinand -8.0: Once again marked Adebayor out of the game. Ferdinand and Vidic, if it was not already obvious, are the best centre back duo in the world.
Evra -8.0: Won every single duel against Walcott, and did not give the Englishman a kick. Back to his best after a shaky spell around a month ago.
Fletcher -7.5: Plenty of bite in the midfield, which helped Man Utd. overpower Arsenal in the middle-of-the-park. Harshly sent off when he clearly won the ball, and will now miss the final.
Carrick -7.5: Again showed his opposite number Song how you should play the midfield holding role. Did not waste a pass.
Anderson -8.0: One of the most under-rated players in the Premier League. He is world class, and the most important player in the centre of United’s midfield.
Ronaldo -9.0: If he has underperformed in big games the last few seasons, the same cannot be said this campaign. Ronaldo has scored in every knockout round, and tonight blasted home two goals, as well as making Park’s first. Man-of-the-match.
Park -8.5: Lots of energy, Park never stopped running for his team. A superb finish after just eight minutes that all but ended the tie. Involved in the third goal too, making the pass to Rooney.
Rooney -8.0: Linked up intelligently in attack, and provided the assist for Ronaldo’s second goal. Almost scored himself with a beautiful curling shot. The best player in the Premier League this season.
Subs
Giggs 6.5: A few tricks and flicks, but nothing to get too excited about.
Rafael 6.0: Held his position.
Berbatov 5.5: Made little impact.

Look. With the lines up above, you are being unfair to Gibbs. He knows that it was his fault for the 1st goal.
Everyone slips.
4-5-1 is not a bad idea for 1st half. Wenger can just switch to 4-4-2 on 2nd half. It just that we conceded 2 goals too damn early.

u can not win anything with kidz.. The squad is okay, but needs experienced players in the midfield , defence and attack.. I’m utterly disappointed that we lost… I’m sure with Arshavin, Rosicky and Eduardo fit, with new experienced quality players, provided that no one leaves, Arsenal will be able to challenge for all the trophies. Now, we have Chelsea to face on Sunday.
This is Man United’s time. Our time will come… Gunner 4 life…

We had a good squad on the pitch and THEY did not deliver! Stop it with that “change the coach” noise!
Like you, I am VERY disappointed how our CL run came to an end. ManU were far superior then us. Theo, was supposed to run all over, Evra like predicted and he wasn’t even close to even passing by him. He isn’t ready.
Our season failed to due to too many injuries. We had an incosistent team ALL season. The Boss tried to do the best he could to shuffle our players, but to have come to the FA/CL Semis that is a lot to achieve in my opinion. Disagree with me all you want but perhaps you shouldn’t be worried too much about what ManU. fans will say to you tomorrow and question your loyalty to Arsenal. You are right go find another club to support…LAME!
arsenalkidz, Jose M.? Stay off the drugs fella. Not trying to disrepect you but I think he will convert Arsenal into a boring club. I say, Arsene stays!
Win or lose I am a Gunner for life!!!

I have always checked this site but this is my first time posting, hello to all.
What a depressing taste in my mouth I have had all day. What the game came down to is EXPERIENCE. ManU finished the game as they have been there done that, while arsenals young guns struggled to put the pieces together. Very disappointing how even after 1 goal down how low our moral slipped so low. Really? what if a team like liverpool went down surely they would have responded differently (as they are known for). Where was the heart? The “older” players did not do their job in controlling the game and I feel pity for our young players who still have a lot to learn. ManU was a better team all around, as much as that hurts to say.
On a positive note, this loss should lead to changes in the summer. Let adebayor go if he wants to, clearly his mind was not with arsenal over these two legs. Theres 25million we could use to buy a “gamechanger”. We need to buy at least TWO EXPERIENCED players, one at center back/CDM and another class forward who can change the game. The arsenal board need to realize that this team is not mediocre and if they want to be champions than they have to pay up. 5 trophyless years is an embarrassment for a class team as arsenal! In addition, Wenger stays he is the best man to run this team. As much as you may wanna blame him the players are equally at fault.
As for the rest of the season, we need to get our moral up and finish our season strong we still play chelsea and manu. Wenger needs to put a strong emphasis on keeping his big players (RVP, Cesc) as they our vital for our future. Next season looks promising (how many times have i said that before?) but seriously, if wenger does the right moves over the summer, next season will be ours! All we can do as fans is keep our faith and root for our team regardless. WIN, LOSE, OR TIE GUNNER TILL I DIE

nz..there you go again opening your mouth how, Arsene should be on his way out. Yes, I understand your frustration, but to call for his is just you talking out of anger. Give yourself a couple of days to cool off and you will be back supporting the Boss. hahaha.
Fans like you who give a bad name to the club.

JESUS FUCKING CHRIST!!!! Why are some of you sacking Arsene and talking about a major overhaul next season?
Nz Gunner you are a fucking moron for saying we need a new coach, an absolute fucking moron.
You are a disgrace to us fans and know nothing. Jose, Bergkamp, Richard (sp) good god just plain out stupid.
Unfortunate that Gibbs slipped, he played a great 1st leg and the player does one thing wrong and your crucifying them. Your probably the same fans who booed Eboue and now are singing his praises. Instead of sitting there blaming players let’s just take the loss to a better team today.
God some of you piss me off. Go jump on the Man U bandwagon

If it’s more of the same type of medicine ie. buying kids it will be another season in frustration.AW better admit his mistakes . Three or four players will bring Arsenal right back.
The brutal truth was bull dog and company were given far too much room and time.It was criminal.
Ronaldo was good but let’s see how good he is when surrounded by three player or Gattuso.
AW better forget about beautiful football and play to win and stop trying to pass your way round a minefield in the penalty area and please make a minefield in your own box.

Bendtner – On loan
Denilson – On loan

Also, I do want adebayor to go cause hes not for real, hes constently offside, he looks uninterested, he has to wait for the perfect ball which wastes around 4 – 6 chances. If ac milan offer that 20M to 30M then get the fuck out of here ade, go get your money you wanted.

For the record ,AW has lost two sf to the red faced 1999 and 2003.AW beat him in the fifth round 2002 and final 2005.
I think tactically AW is too obsessed with his attacking principles without beefing up the defence to the required level in the modern game.He once said he will never compromise his soccer philosophy. He better or ARsenal will be left furhter behind.
He could take a leaf out of the top managers and play boring football to win.
Barca were not given much room by Chelsea compared to the freedom of the ES enjoyed by the british bulldog faced.

O.K. this is the end of a dream i am very sorry but life go on. In my opinion, Wenger lost the battle he could put in game some surprises the arsenal players, i d’ont now why but they slowing down when comes in front of oponents, we need to play with first touch, make our passing more dangerous, what we have seeing last night is just playing the ball, but we need to play the football the ARSENAL FOOTBALL, so let’s hope we get it, and we need to be along side squad because We Are GUNNERS we never give up and our dream never will die

Oh dear, nz, your opinion sucks to be honest. Like what USA gunner said, if you really dislike Arsenal, go to Man U instead.
Oh, Carlos, well said.

I do believe that by sacking AW will be a big mistake. This team resolve around him, and by sacking him, most major player will definitely leave the club.
For the tactics, couldnt agree more, last night game tactic really2 sucks. We are unfortunate for the 2 goals but we are fortunate that only 3 goals for that night. it could be more. Adebayor as a lone striker, an yet he is the one who play wide attacker. An there is less variety in attack, we only attack from the right side, which fail miserably.
BoD, should give extra cash for next season and boost the squad with really physical, experienced player. Should really find an excellent defensive coach. AW should also buy some good bacup player for the team next season.
And please AW, dont make it 6th season in a row..

Its a bit hard to say whether Adebayor simply just didn’t show up or he was marked out of the game by the best central defense in football. In the 1st leg, he was clearly starved of any service whatsoever. 2nd leg was strange because we started so well- but the Park goal just deflated us when it came out of nowhere. It is true though, Adebayor is not able to create chances for himself but rather relying solely on service. IMO Adebayor or RVP are gone this summer. Arshavin has proven himself to be a monster in the PL. He is best in the supporting striker Bergkamp role and IMO, not since Dennis have we had a player more capable of filling that spot. There is absolutely no sense in wasting his proven talent at that position. Why put him on the flank when we have other players to do the job? Let him create chances up front and pick out the runs and overlaps, while Fabregas pulls the strings from deeper in the midfield (where he is most effective IMO) and making the most of his passing range. I think going into next year you will see RVP and Arshavin leading the line or Adebayor and Arshavin.
As for the match, I thought the team selection was pretty good- although I still would have put Eboue at LB. Gibbs has performed admirably this year and his slip surely was not the defining moment of the tie. But- you knew he was going to cost us a goal at some point and it came at the worst possible time. But like I said- that goal was not the defining moment. We were beaten soundly through two legs, no doubt about it. We are simply not good enough to beat United in these types of matches. If its any consolation, most teams aren’t. The fact of the matter is that we have some work to do if we want to get back to this point and give ourselves a chance to progress.
I thought Nasri was probably our best player yesterday. Once again, he showed the tenacity and fight throughout the whole match- no matter how futile his efforts were. I also was impressed by Walcott’s effort. He was really working his butt off out there, but just could not find the break through. The first goal simply crushed our spirit.

no do not sack manu and believe me chelsea will only learn from our mistake manu closed down the middle of the park and effectively killed our style of play pool dont play that way so thats what happened we need a creative spark and arshavind did that not putting to much pressure on him but he can make the diffrence
and ade can go to fucking milan that fat piece of shit unloyal dick

The sad thing is that we finish the season with empty hands!
1.You sac Arsene and the whole team will leave. Might as well put us with the ranks of the Spuds then!
2. NZ Gunner, your posts show that you know nothing about a team game and you think everything can be fixed with one little switch. This isn’t like the CLAP that you have and with one shot your cured.
3. I think Wegner will learn from his mistakes and not depleat the team with Loans. He can also learn that buying a veteran player like AA isn’t that bad of an idea.
4. I wouldn’t loan anyone out next year from our starting team. Everyone on the bench is a good enough backup to help us save some fitness.
5. Sell the a holes who don’t want to be there. I would be glad to sell Ady and bring in the likes of Santa Cruz or Teves. Maybe try to get Yaya and then another CDM
6. Can’t blame Gibbs for that goal, just unfortunate. That first goal just took the wind out of our sails. I’m sure it would have been a very different game if that first ball would have bounces in off Rio and we were up 1-0. And I thought it was a great idea to start Gibbs after his performance in the first leg.

i don’t think most arsenal fans understand,
we dont have that much money to spend! a new stadium comes with its costs so don’t go bashing a crop of young guns who lose but its not their fault we just need a cdm(cambiasso any1)dont 4get senderos is coming back

I am an Arsenal Fan, Yes & I am right behind the club & manager, no matter what.
The real problem at Arsenal lies in the spirit of the players playing for the club, they seem to be playing only for their career.
After the thumping received by a miles away better team Man Utd, the spirits dropped & the game was conceded once Ronaldo’s rocket went past Almunia’s goal.
All of them need to be sat down & shown the 2nd semi-final between chelsea & barcelona, where barca kept playing with their heads up & spirit. Also the Liverpool-Ac Milan final.
The problem here is the young players come here raw, Wenger is the games best in turning raw talent to diamonds. The players motivation here are
1. to play the beautiful game (Wenger’s adamant philosophy)
2. show the bigger clubs how good they are
3. end of the season they move to a bigger/better club (thats what they think)
Game over!
We need some players like Lee Dixon, David Seaman, Tony Adams, Martin Keown who bled for this club kinda characters if we need to win any kind of silverware.
As a manager if Arsene & as a club if Arsenal fail to keep their core team, we r going no where next season.
We need to let Ade & some of them leave, it will defintely weaken the clubs he is going to.
And then maybe look for a commanding Central Defender, Midfielder to partner Cesc & an out & out striker like karim benzema or Villa.
I would love to see Frank Ribery & Villa come in the summer. Im sure Wenger’s french connection & Cesc’s spanish connections can help this. But, would they want to come to a club whose major ambitions lie in only playing beautiful football & not challenging for trophies?
I for sure do not want Gus Hiddink to replace Wenger, after seeing his tactics at last nite’s 2nd semi-final, he played 9 defenders & 1 fwd.
Also, it would be a nice theatre if chelsea went thru to the final. Ronaldo & his antics and we have the (oscar goes to ) drogba. they wouldnt need rollers on the pitch with these to jokers. Drogba – what a cheat & nice show u put on after-match. They both must surely try their luck out in hollywood or bollywood.
Hope next year is Arsenal’s in some respect.
