Report: Man. United 1-0 Arsenal

scrap vs united in champs leagueArsenal will have to come back crawling for a berth in Rome after been thoroughly subdued by the champions in first attempt of this semi-final.

Tonight’s succumbing drew similarities to their last visit to that so-called ‘theater of dreams’ – a 4-0 FA Cup mauling – but thanks to Almunia’s almost impervious heroics, the margin of defeat was much, much slenderer.

And for those persistent optimists who had entered Old Trafford fearing worse than John O’Shea’s lone strike, Wenger’s men could be much, much alive.

Former United centreback Mikael Silvestre and teenage leftback Kieran Gibbs both came through late fitness tests to boost the defensive unit, although the opening exchanges hardly inspired confidence in a back four missing both William Gallas and Gael Clichy.

Within two minutes, Darren Fletcher’s cross had given Wayne Rooney the chance to force Manuel Almunia into a fine one-handed save and it quickly became apparent that Arsenal would struggle to cope with the tempo of United’s opening salvoes.

A superb double save from Almunia denied Tevez just after quarter of an hour had elapsed but the resulting corner saw the holders claim the opener that their efforts deserved.

The initial delivery failed to trouble the Arsenal backline but, fatally, Michael Carrick was allowed to pick the ball up beyond the back post and hook it back across goal.

Theo Walcott’s attempt to intercept only served to direct the ball into the path of O’Shea and the Ireland defender finished with the aplomb of a seasoned striker, hitting a half-volley into the roof of the net.

Still reeling from that setback, Arsenal were fortunate not to concede a second when Cristiano Ronaldo headed an inviting cross from Tevez straight at Almunia.

But as the first half came to a close, the visitors began to string a few passes together although there were no clear chances to show for their attractive build-up and Almunia had to be quickly off his line to deny Ronaldo after a slipshod passback by Gibbs.

With United’s energy levels slipping, chances were thinner on the ground after the interval, but the hosts were still unfortunate not to double their lead with just over 20 minutes left after a piece of brilliance from Ronaldo.

Picking up a loose ball just inside the Gunners’ half, the Portuguese winger advanced to within 30 yards of the goal before unleashing a wickedly dipping drive that left Almunia completely stranded but clattered against the bar.

By that stage, Giggs had entered the fray and the frustration of the evening for United was summed up by the fact that only a fractional offside decision prevented the veteran Welsh winger from marking his landmark appearance with a goal.

Soon, it was over, and all Wenger’s men could say was; it could have been worse.

Of course, it can be a whole lot better next Tuesday.

Overall a poor performance by Arsenal except Almunia who kept us in the game and also the 2nd leg. Gibbs did well to restrict Ronaldo to a certain extend. Song’s work rate is fantastic besides protecting the defence. Still plenty to play for in the 2nd leg.

Is it possible that Diaby could’ve played worse? He sucks big time on the left. And I won’t say anything about Ade because I will be repeating myself, it’s always the same. Credit to United, they closed us down pretty well, Walcott was unable to do anything not because of Evra, but because of Rooney and Anderson/Carrick. But still, Wenger shouldn’t have subbed him. Arshavin shouldn’t play against Portsmouth, the team gets accustomed to him playing but then he can’t play next week (not saying that he shouldn’t play for the rest of the season).

diaby played shite….walcott was rightly subbed. bendnter brought the game to life. we may well be knocked out of the champions league cause if united score 1 we will have to score 3 which is very unlikely…

Adebayor was pathetic, Diaby useless. Why did Eduardo only get 10 minutes, It is so obvious from his speed of thought and wyliness that he is a direct swao for Arshavin. Why didn’t he paly in the FA semi I will never fathom.
Compare Ade’s non work rate to Tevez – there is no comparison. On tonight’s total swanning around, never making a tcakle losing all the headers and total shite first touch, I think he should be sold off. He didn’t beat one man in the whole match. He is living in cloud cukoo land,

WENGER HAS FLOPPED THIS SEASON WITH HIS TACTICS! All season we’ve seen players like DIABY,EBOUE,VAN-PERSI being played OUT-OF-POSITION with little effects yet it continues to be same every week.Even tonight BENTNER came on for THEO and stayed right-wing,why wasn’t he pushed up to support Ade? I DONT even blame Adebayor because hes always left on his own to face up to 3 defenders at a time.

Ade is too laid back and always waiting for the perfect ball. he should take more initiatives to win the ball. I would rather have Eboue to Diaby for this game. At least he can defend better.

ONe fucking forward doesn’t FUCKING WORK!!!

God dam I’m upset, I love Wegner but for fucks sake, first not playing AA in the fA and now parking the fucking bus at old t. COME ON!

I didnt think I’d be saying this but silvestre was awesome tonite. He was quick with his decision making and was never sloppy.

Gibbs keeps getting better game after game. Had a good game tonite.

If song continues playing this way, he surely is the long awaited cdm. Nice hustle play.

My only disappointment was diaby. Sloppy and indecisive. Should have been subbed after 1st half or early in the 2nd.

Almunia was class today and kept us in the game.

Not a bad game game after all, condidering we played away to one of the best, if not the best team in the world.

Should be an interesting 2nd leg

    almunia was dominant.
silvestre was a pleasant surprise. he played well.
song had a very solid game.
nasri, cesc, theo, ade, and diaby didn’t really create any chances.
I thought eduardo should have maybe come in earlier to partner adebayor and eboue should have come in at some point to add some pace and hustle.
Unfortunate result but still all to play for in the second leg.

The 1st leg was disappointing for us at Old Trafford but lets not lose heart cos’ there are still another 90 minutes to play for at the home of The Arsenal which is The Emirates. I believe we have the capability and ability to turn the tables on Man Utd. As a true supporter of The Arsenal, let us stick with this team through thick and thin. The players will need all the support and encouragement they can get. Trust Wenger to show Man Utd that we are a different proposition at the Emirates.

  33. Citygunner says:

USA, arsenal did not park any bus, we were simply outplayed by a resilient manu team.

This game was an exciting game for football fans except arsenal fans.It was nothing like chelsea vs barca.

If we drew or even won this game with the way we played, we would have been singing a different song and talking about how wenger is the greatest.

We palyed and ok game today, just not good enough to win a resolute manu team who are one of the best, if not the best team in the world at the moment. Can we for once be graceful in defeat? If we played any other team like we did today we probably could have won. United were just too fired up right from the start and an in-form united on their day just like today, are unbeatable, I’m sorry.

we are quick to make excuses and throw blame around like nobody’s business.

We were not creative enough because united did not let us, coupled with the fact their defense was absolutely sound on the day.

Besides diaby, every one of our palyers played their hearts out with almunia as man of the match followed by the much hated silvestre.

Except for the lapse that led to the goal,we were defensively sound and that’s why manu didnt score more goals.

Let us give credit where its due and look forward to the next game.

First of all if you all think this then you have no faith in Arsenal, and are not a true fan, Stop stating the negatives. Okay we didnt win, Theres still another chance, 2nd leg, its not an automatic knockout after the loss. Almunia was dominant, good signs for next game, V persie might be fit for the 2nd leg, DUDU, will be 100%, And we will get our act together and win. As for wegner, He knows what hes doing. be confident. Silvestre had a pretty good game, Which left me in awe. Well the next game will prove which players believe in themselves that they can win it all.

For fucks sake arsene please sell adebayor.
He is useless. He did not win a single ball.
And what is diaby actually good at. Is he an attacking player, or is he a defensive mid. what is he good at.
And i believe he is more of a trickster than a footballer. Will anything good ever come out of his flicks and tricks.

Please arsene please..sell ade, sell diaby,,,,fucking dross..

Song put in one of his best performances for arsenal yet again. Almunia worldclass.

    Advantage United..

  41. saminator says:

sylvestre surprised even me, one of his greatest critics. probably because he played on his most familiar turf? otherwise either because he was a lone striker or arsene’s team selection was shiite but ade was useless, fabregas and nasri were pretty quiet. another defensive lapse could cost us another title, like was the case against chelski, this time kolo toure the culprit. bigups to song and almunia for keeping us in the race though.

You should know that I’ve been faithful if not one of the more faithful fans here on the site. When times were down I was the one picking us up (trying to) I’ve never called for anyone’s head and have always supported AW and the team.

But it pisses me off to no end the type of football they play on these away legs! The reason they (Man U) were able to have control of the ball so much was the fact we didn’t put any pressure on their back 4. We play our best when we are attacking not sitting back and sucking our thumbs praying that our keeper has the best game of his life. AW should have known this and should know this from experience. After very inconsistent play from some players he should hae known that they would most likely keep it up.

Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me.

I love the gunners and support them to no end but good grief that game just pissed me off.

Should be an interesting return leg, i just hope we can keep Man U out of the nets!

USAMA I agree Cesc needs to be the one delivering the ball.

The best lineup that I’ve seen this year (Villareal) attacking wise should be the one we go with on Tuesday

    Almunia
    Sagan, Toure, DJ,Gail
    Theo Cesc, Song, Nasri
    RVP
    Ady
hell maybe even use Eboue instead of Nasri

“There is a Final at stake. Don’t worry, when you play at home knowing you could reach a Final, we will be up for it. I am confident because I believe we will be on top next Tuesday and you will see a different Arsenal team.”

I can only hope that there is a fire under the bums of these players next Tuesday and they realize that these games make great teams. If Arsenal are to take this game at home, and then move on to Rome there is no saying what that confidence can do for a team.

This game coming up is where champions are born. I just hope that our team shows up and give the Arsenal a good name.

AW should rest the entire back line this weekend and bring up a boat load of reserves. Give Wilshire, Villa, and the rest of the boys a shot and lets seee what the future holds for some of these reserve members. Hell play the Carling Cup team this weekend.

We can’t afford to lose anybody

    Usama…

For sure dude…we are very much “in this”.

Big deal down 0-1 coming home. Man Utd did nothing more than what is expected…they held serve at their home pitch.

Why can’t we do the same at The Emirates??

If Almunia, Song and the Back 4 turn in another great performance and we get some kind bounces…I see no reason we can’t walk out winners at 2-0 OR win it ugly in PK’s.

Yeah…I agree it sucks that we mounted nothing in attack and played so tentatively with the ball…but Gooners gotta stop trippin’…this thing is a long way from being over…matter of fact…

    IT’S ON!!

Now lets bring it on Tuesday.
And I am sure we will be attacking in waves with a balls to the wall effort.

P.S. – I want my boy Eboue to start on wing and bring Walcott on at 60 mins. Walcott looked disinterested to me…i feel really bummed with his lack of passion tonight.

P.P.S. – the goal was on Ade…he abandoned his marking assignment (O’Shea) and started to run out of the 18 yard box BEFORE the ball had been cleared and/or before we had gotten possession. That is an inexcusable mental error in set-piece defending.

well it seems now that Clichy, silvest, and RVP are a doubt for Tuesday while eduardo is def out. i never loose faith in the squad but it seems we are up against the wall. I blame our current state on Wenger. He is a great coach but this year he just did not make the right decisions whether it was our paper thin defence, crap formations, or going to the well one to many times with players; it has just not worked out. it will be interesting to see what happens in the summer. offense is good but but we need soldiers in the back.

whooooaaa RVP is out for next Tuesday? I don’t buy it. If that’s the case then you HAVE, HAVE to start Theo behind Ady, with Eboue on the right.

It would be a pure shame if he couldn’t play. And he would have to take a long look in the mirror to evaluate himeself and his time at Arsenal.

Has anyone seen the movei Miracle? “we will play them 10 times and lose 9 out the 10 times, but not tonight!!!!!!!! ” I would love to see that locker room next Tuesday before the game. You havae to pump up your team, we need to come out flying, lately we have been looking a little sluggish. Great time for a captain to step in. Hell have Gallas come in and talk to the boys!!!

For RVP a mild strain of the groin is a long way from the heart.

whooooaaa RVP is out for next Tuesday?

Hell have Gallas come in and talk to the boys!!!

yes we lost but 1-0 yes we played like shit and manu could have killed us off before half time but w8 till manu come to the emirates and i pray we can pass clichy fitt we need eduardo and RVP diaby only is good in the cm role we should have played a 4-4-2 even if it was betnder was up AA obviously would rip them apart but seirously we should have started eboue to link up with sagna the men can read each others minds walcott is our supersub he needs time manu were diciplined really really pissed at our formation denilson was right to be dropped song really won his posistion as cdm
were still in it and see no reason to be out 1-0 at old trafford hell we were lucky it wasn’t 5-0
we showed character we don’t have a weak defence in fact at full strength we can take down any1 on any day we miss willy G and we need captain fab to work some magic and we need to pass them to the death
gunners we will be in rome come the time of the final
