Shot ourselves in the foot

#1. THEO WALCOTT: The young Englishman was on fire the whole match. He showed me things I’d never seen from him before…like burning passion and a real battling spirit. The first half was dominated by him (like he did against Wigan) his pace was eating up the Chelsea back 4 and he was attacking with real verve!

His one timer showed a skilled finish even if it did get a kind deflection off of Ashley Cole. He faded a bit in the second half but that was due more to the absence of teammates to support his runs…all too often I saw Theo go on a lung busting run with the ball only to find himself alone with no support and then slowly choked off.

If his Central Midfielders and Strikers had done more running in support of him he could have had alot more options going forward. Sent in a beautiful cross that was just inches from Robin’s out stretched boot. Great performance from Theo.

#2. DENILSON: I am no great fan of the young Brazilian…but I actually thought he turned in a wonderful match at least defensively…which was his priority today. He looked very bright early on, with many clever and confident touches and showed some really good reads defensively as he nipped in to intercept Chelsea passes or break up their attacks. His defensive play was urgent, focused and high tempo…well done.

Offensively he needed to get up the pitch more and support our attacks. Too often our Theo or Robin or Adebayor were on an island up top with no options being offered by the central midfield. He was lucky not to get a red card for the shove on the referee…that was STUPID…even if the call was utter crap.

#3. KIERAN GIBBS: Recovered well from his tweaked groin and turned in a great match. Nothing of note came down his left flank which is a real credit to the youngster. He kept his nose clean and played with a real intelligence. Sometimes going forward I feel he is a little too ambitious for a 19 year old rookie.

He needs to learn to just push the ball and then quickly dish it to our wingers and strikers…a few times he dallied on the ball near the Chelsea 18 yard box OR was caught in two minds and was then easily stripped of possession. That is an easy adjustment to his game and I am sure Pat Rice will have a quiet word with the lad about it.

Honorable Mention

ROBIN VAN PERSIE: Hustled, battled, distributed the ball well, dropped back to pick up the ball and play defence. Problem was he got ZERO service in attacking positions which muted his ability to threaten the net.

EMMANUEL ADEBAYOR: See above.

EMMANUEL EBOUE: Looked spry out there, did a good job at getting forward but lacked that final ball to unlock the defence. Kept his nose clean in defence. A lot of Gooners have tried to blame the first goal on him BUT i totally disagree. It was a long, aerial ball that was drifting away from Eboue and towards the touch line (and a possibly offside Malouda). Eboue had to rotate his body to square up on Malouda and take away the outside edge…Malouda’s first touch was exquisite as it took him across Eboue’s body and into our 18 yard box.

I thought Eboue’s recovery was superb and it took away any chance of Malouda rounding him to fire home. Eboue nearly got a block on the shot. The goal is squarely on Fabianski’s shoulders…a keeper can NEVER let himself be beat short side along the ground by a cross body shot. I thought Eboue did a good job handling Drogba when he tried to come down the right side of our defence. Considering Walcott was attacking deep all match…Eboue did very well considering he got minimal tracking back defence from the midfielders.

Lemon(s)

ARSENE WENGER: The line-up was trash. No cup-tied and rested Arshavin until late in the match. No Song instead of Silvestre, No Nasri instead of Diaby. The fact Wenger took off our only two match winners (Robin/Adebayor) in favour of Arshavin and Bendtner and leaving Diaby on when the game was still tied is an absolute mystery. Those are our 2 best FK and PK takers…why on earth would you take them off when the game looked stalemated and heading towards extra-time and PK’s. Ohhhh and not getting Silvestre out after a decent 60 minutes in favour of a fresh and physical Song was another blunder.

Loved how Silvestre quit running on the Drogba goal. It feels like the squads chances of winning were sabotaged by our own Manager…just brutal tactics from Wenger today. And to all the Wenger bootlickers out there ready to talk smack at me…feck off!!. I’ve supported Wenger 100% for his first 11.5 years at The Arsenal…but the last 1.5 years has been dismal by his own lofty standards.

FABIANSKI: Really feel sad for the young Pole…just when he had the look and feel of a Number #1 keeper he turned in this absolute nightmare of a match. Gibbs bailed him out early after that ridiculous charge out on Drogba at 3 minutes into the match. He was geriatric slow getting down on Malouda’s first strike on net that went right under Fabianski and just drifted wide of the post.

The first goal he gave up a goal a keeper should NEVER surrender…a cross body, short side, worm burner shot by a tightly marked Malouda. The second goal was pathetic as well…if he’s gonna make that type of charge out…he has to at the very least get the ball or take out the striker…not alligator arm him and let him skip by unscathed. Kid proved he is not ready which is a damn shame for The Arsenal and The Kid.

DIABY: Utter trash the whole match. Clearly nervous and tight. Coughed the ball up all match. His first touch is pitiful and his decision making is as slow as molasses. Why do we even keep him around…seriously??. He can’t play wing, can’t tackle, can’t receive a pass, scores a nice goal about once every 3 months…just brutal. I’d much rather see the 16 year old Jack Wilshire on the pitch anyday.

TOURE: Played well all match and then completely lost the plot late when he was caught way up the pitch, flat footed and ball watching. He knew the only way Chelsea could beat us was by the long ball and that Silvestre needed babysitting. Yet he ignored his responsibilities and left the human tortoise (Silvestre) alone with the lurking Drogba. Inexcusable mental and defensive lapse. Gotta call him out for it. Nothing personal.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Wenger owes the supporters an apology for this abomination of a line-up. What exactly is he saving Song and Arshavin for???…a meaningless Prem League match against Liverpool?? Arshavin was fresh and had to start…Diaby was trash the entire game but he stayed the full 90 mins. Just Brutal.

I feel gutted the same way I did after last years Quarter-Final “loss” to Liverpool. The match was ours for the taking…Chelsea had nothing but the predictable long balls, chippy tackles, diving, pissing and moaning at the referees. Feels like we left a lot of money on the table and that never sits well with me.

Only upside to this massive letdown is that we have a spotty Man Utd on tap in 2 weeks in the CL Semis and hopefully the lads can channel their anger and frustration from this match into a resilient, focused and professional performance over both legs of the tie and we get Clichy, Djourou and Almunia back in the starting XI. As for Liverpool on Tuesday…i couldn’t give a toss about that match. I want this Club in a Cup Final this season.

Denilson should be fuckin lemon and so should Silvestre.

I’m very pissed at the moment. Matter of fact, I would like the chance to beat the shit out of Drogba and that Fabianski twat right now…LOL. He’s still a promising stopper though.

This semi final defeat is very hard to swallow because with the kind of selection and performance, we literally handed the FA Cup final spot to Chelsea. Chelsea were made to look very good which make this game very frustrating to watch for every Arsenal fan.

Chelsea put out a full strength team and I felt we should have done it as well. There are key players who are fit to play in the likes of Arshavin, Song and Nasri unless Wenger feels that this FA Cup is of no significant.

I watch the matches closely, I make “in match” notes, I’ve been following the Club for 14 years.

Snarky comments like yours contribute nothing to the threads

Let me guess…its supposed to hurt my feelings huh??

None of the goals were the result of something Denilson did or didn’t do.

Ballack, Essien and Lampard did nothing offensively…other than a couple of long balls lumped down field by Lampard that were not handled by our keeper and CB’s.

I said Denilson played well defensively…I stand by that.

Offensively he did nothing…I admitted that.

I was one of Denilson’s harshest critics this season. But yesterday I honestly feel he turned in a decent defensive performance.

    Where was Cesc yesterday exactly??
If we are going to talk about shjiit performances…

Name one pass Robin got in an attacking position or a through ball for him to run on??

He had to drop back to the half-way line to get any sort of touches…that falls on Cesc. He didn’t show up yesterday…I love my captain…but he needs to shoulder alot of responsibility for the lack of service to Robin and Butta’-legs.

    Arsenekidz…

The weird thing is…if Wenger was looking to rest guys…why did he rest Arshavin who won’t be involved in the Champions League against Man Utd??

A 4-5 weeks ago Wenger was remarking at how hungry and determined Arshavin was in playing through the cut foot injury he had when we played Cardiff City in the FA Cup. He talked about how desperate Arshavin was to make his mark in the FA Cup.

It’s weird…it makes me wonder if he broke some team rule like curfew for example and got disciplined for it??

Diaby over Nasri on the wing???…granted Nasri had two lack lustre performances against Wigan and Villarreal…but not enough to be benched in favour of Diaby.

It was honourable when Wenger let the Young Guns of 2007 play the Carling Cup Final after they had battled to get us there and deserved the reward of a Cup Final.

But to turn around and leave 3 of our best players over the last 2 months on the sidelines and then sub off late our only 2 certified match winners is really confusing and letdown.

    No Randy, nothing personal.

I support the club from when Adams became its youngest captain. And I was privileged to see its transformation.

The Mancs just got booted of the cup and the team selection seems to be debated again. So, should red nose apologise or get the boot.

Don’t think so, he knows his job more than others, that’s why he sits in the hot seat. The day he is not fit for it, he will no longer be in the seat, as simple as that.

Constructive criticism is OK, but negativity only brings the team down. Maybe Everton made it today because of their vocal support which made them believe.

U sincerely think AA could have coped with the physical demands of the Chelski midfield!!! You know his height and weight??? They would brush him aside.

Nasri came back after international duty and played when ill. What was the result? A lackluster performance.. So give him time to recover, he is human too.

You needed big guys, that’s why Diaby was there. BTW how many times did Diaby come in matches after being out and swing the tide in our favour???

Song out? OK, we r better with him. But how many matches has he played recently. Is it good to risk him for an FA cup? Anybody can guess how much this FA cup brings in our bank? We have Liverpool coming up and Villa are not that far behind. What would be the scenario if we lose the 4th place. Remember we have a difficult schedule ahead. Maybe we will have a disappointing end, but at least the guy did his job properly. As every fan I am disappointed with the result, but am OK following AFC still.

    That’s football.

Just a gentle reminder to all of you guys.. 1 stupid brainless footballer call Densilon passed the ball back to our own penalty box while we were under pressure, another big time idiot name Diaby who attempted to dribble his way out and lost his possession to Anelka and luckily for these 2 idiots, Anelka hit the pole..

    Karlos,

I totally disagree with you on denilson as he should have been one of the lemons other than that, I concur with most of your assessment.

No need to reiterate whats been already said but wenger got it wrong with his selection period.

One thing I agree with wenger on is that he is a prisoner of his own policy like he said. Which means our opinions dont count but his. I could live with that though.

His strategy seemed like it was going to work before every thing fell apart in the second half. Chelsea out muscled our players in the midfield especially denilson, I could count how many times he was not bullied on the ball. Diaby, almost gave them a goal after he tried to dribble in the box and was disposesed only for anelka to hit the frame work.

My only consolation is that 4th place seems like a done deal with villa’s continous bad run. If we can win three out of our remaining six games, we should be fine. Also we are currently playing with a make shift defence which makes it difficult for wenger and the team in general.

Wenger deserves any criticism he gets because he is the captain of the ship. No way arshavin should have started from the bench.

All in all, it is what it is.

Only if we can take this frustration out on pool,I would feel much better. But then again, with a make shift defence and rvp aggravated his groin yet again

    Oh boy!!! what a season.

    Ritesh…

I’ve never onced called for the removal of Wenger. I appreciate what he has done for the club in his first 10 years at the helm.

Don’t get yer knickers is a twist because I dare to criticize Wenger’s refusal to start 3 of our best performers (over the last 2 months) and to sub out our top 2 strikers when the match was still tied late. Or if I have an issue with Wengers inactivity in the transfer market last January and again this summer.

Being a sycophant of Wenger does NOT make you a better supporter than the next day.

Interesting that many who say their loyalty is to the shirt/crest and not the players…turn around and scold others for putting success of the club ahead of slavish devotion and adherence to the “Wenger way”.

Pssssssssst it’s not 2006 anymore…were are on the cusp of 4 years without silverware. Sitting top performers in the Semi-Finals of the FA Cup when 4th place is sewn up tight is assinine.

I agree with Gunnerboy…saying as much doesn’t make anybody a “plastic fan”.

Yeah I did and I do.

Toure is the senior defender and vice-captain. He knows better than anyone about the abscence of foot speed in Silvestre…so yeah…with 10 minutes left in the match he does need to be thinking defense first and keeping an eye on Drogba!

All the more considering Chelsea had was reduced to lumping long balls in an effort to pressure our defence.

    Christ yer thick!

Tired of wanks like you who feel it is OK to trash on Eboue for any and everything but want to turn a blind eye to Toure’s shortcomings…way to pick your spots…PUSSY!

Toure should recieve equal or more blame for that goal as well.He was the man in charge @ the back,he is faster than silvetre, and the ball came through his side of the defence. He was out of his position and we paid dearly for it.

I do not blame silvester as I do not see what he has done wrong here. We knew he didnt have the pace before we put him in there. I remember one manu fan saying silvester is a disaster waiting to happen plus we got what we paid for. He chased drogba as much as he could but still wouldnt have caught drogba for another century. Gone are his best days and we know it. It will happen again if we still have him in our back line period.

I too am confused by the lineup and the substitutions. This was our best chance for silverware. A gazillion euros for Arshavin and he’s on the bench until the 75th minute? Song, our most in-form player, doesn’t even appear? It’s hard to second guess Wenger, but it seems strange.

Essien and the rest of the Blues midfield kept Fabregas out of the mix and our strikers could not get service. Only Walcott could get forward, and most of the time he was all alone.

Did anyone else notice Chelsea celebrating like they’ve won something afterwards? I say save the bubbly for when you hoist a trophy. Come on Everton.

It was a heart breaking loss like you said. However, you dont, and cant control peoples emotions. Telling somebody to grow up because they are venting their frustrations is uncalled for as everybody reacts to things differently.

We will always disagree to agree as long as we have the same common aim as arsenal fans. I dont think we should be insulting each other for a result we did not influence in any way.

A friend of mine and a manu fan said to me the other day, do these players and managers know the emotional stress they put as through as fans when they dont live up to expectation.Win or lose, they still get their fat pay check.

The players, and more especially Wenger deserve whatever criticsm they recieve because of the teams performance, and no fan should be called a plastic fan for constructively criticizing wenger and the team.

Uneasy lies the head that wears the crown

Lets pick ourselves up and take out our frustrations on liverpool.

good ratings, excepts for denilson and that CLOWN silvestre. Denilson is the worse midfielder i have seen in our team in a long, long time.. and then silvestre.. I almost wish cygan would come back.. How can we ever start winning prices again when we buy second class defenders?! matches are deceided on the quality of the defence, espacially in the CL..
as for fabianski.. it was predictable that he would make a mistake like that. You’ll never see a keeper like vd sar or buffon running out his own box 4 (!) times in one match. Against villareal he did and we were lucky. That kind of actions are far to risky. Hope he learned from it and i still have faith in him. Don’t forget he’s quit young for a gk!

true, true. one cannot control others. and i would also agree, that a fan is a fan whether he cheers or critizes.

but that’s hardly the point. a fan is a prat if all he does is tell other fans that they are not as good a fan as he, merely because they have differing opinions.

and yes, CONSTRUCTIVELY criticize the team and gaffer as you please. but the constant karping and backbiting – of arsenal fans on other arsenal fans – is too much. that is my point.

admittedly, i too, wanted to strangle denilson, silvestre, drogba, fabianski, and especially that turf diving lampard!

but heads up boyz – there is still much to play for!

Drog’s second goal against arsenal was not FAB’S mistake. It was lazy ass silvestre fault for quiting to run with drogba halfway. Fabianski HAD to come out, he had no other choice. You really need to read the threads more closely.

Because while you singled me out for your criticism…you are actually arguing with me.

I have never said “I am a better fan” in the 2 years I’ve been posting. I agree that would be childish.

I write an opinion piece…of course people will agree and disagree as they see fit. I have no issues with that.

My issue is with those that want to attack others loyalty, passion and credentials because they dare to offer blunt assessments of a player or manager or the board.

Being a mindless drone who likes to shake their Pom-Pom’s and just enjoy the ride are no better a fan than others who express their frustration or impatience with the players, Manager or the Board.

    To each his own.

Even those who take the approach to 4 years without a trophy as merely:

“Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose, that is life”

Silvestre is actually blaming Fabianski for the mistake.

    He told “France-football” this;

“He (Drogba) had an edge on me. The ball arrived his way and the keeper went for it, whereas he could have waited for an intervention, or for us to force Drogba into going to one side.”

The former Manchester United defender said: “I am highly disappointed by the final result, but as well by the performance. We are capable of playing much better, like we have done over the past few months.”

  81. Citygunner says:

    Randy,

Fabianski was to blame for that goal no doubt. He came too far off his line and didnt give the defenders enough time to pressure drogba into making a hasty decision. If anything, he should have stayed within the 18 yrd box where he could make contact with his hands. It was was a hasty silly decision in an effort to impress, sad it didnt work for him.

Even wenger admitted it in a way not to dent fabby’s confidence when he said it was a misunderstanding between the keeper and defenders, and also when he drew comparisons to petr cech’s blunder against liverpool in the cl.
This is what wenger had to say:

The manager conceded that the Polish international was “not at his best” as Chelsea came from behind to register a 2-1 win at Wembley.

However, Wenger argues that even Petr Cech, considered among Europe’s elite keepers, was on the end of some flak for his display against Liverpool just a few days earlier. Therefore Fabianski, 24 on Saturday, should not be judged too harshly.

“I wouldn’t like to put too much responsibility for this defeat on Fabianski,” he said. “It would be unfair.

“Let’s see him recover and not speak too much about what he has done on Saturday.

“I think he will be one of the best goalkeepers in the world. I firmly believe that.

“He has the talent, he is brave, he is intelligent. Technically he is very good too. He was not at his best against Chelsea but we have to accept that. It can happen to anyone. It happened to Cech on Tuesday. So it can happen.”

Even though it was his fault, we still love him. I still believe he has far more greater potential than almunia. He’ll come good with time.

    City “G”…

I completely agree with that assessment of Fabianski.

I felt confident that he would turn in a great performance against Chelsea…based upon his play versus Wigan and Villarreal.

It was a huge bummer to see him give up two soft goals, especially the second…where he was obviously being way too impulsive and flat out trying to hard to be the hero. Like you said we need to keep in mind that at 24 he is still a “kid” at the goalkeeper position.

I don’t know if i am feeling “love” for him after Chelsea and last nights Liverpool (second goal he was looking for wallets and loose change in the back of his net instead of snatching that soft looping deflection by Benayoun).

BUT I do agree 100% when you say that he has far more potential than Almunia and that he’ll come good with time.
