Arsenal defender Gael Clichy has been diagnosed with a stress fracture of the vertebra, according to reliable news source France Football.

The French fullback sustained the back injury during the 1st leg of the Champions League quarter-final against Villarreal. Clichy’s injury was expected to rule him out for a fortnight, but Arsene Wenger has confirmed that the 22-year-old will be missing for longer.

This news comes as goalkeeper Manuel Almunia, Johan Djourou and William Gallas all remain sidelined through their respective injuries. While fellow defenders Bacary Sagna and Kieran Gibbs are also doubts for tomorrow’s FA Cup semi-final clash with Chelsea.

Clichy’s back problem looks set to rule him out for more than a fortnight which means Arsenal’s defence will be majorly weakened during the climax to the season.

Update: Bacary Sagna won’t be fit for the FA Cup semi after the Frenchman still has a virus, which according to Arsene Wenger, is ‘weakening him’. As mentioned above, it will also weaken Arsenal, who are without 3 of their 4 first choice defenders for tomorrow.

Why isn’t wenger recalling Armand Traore from his loan spell from portsmouth so that the left back slot is easily taken care of?

Because he isn’t a good LB yet, that’s why. He’s good on the wing but not good defensively and good skinned constantly by Aaron Lennon not long ago. Silvestre is a better bet there though he is a disaster waiting to happen and further worse because we will have to move Song to CB from midfield where he has been a lege.

we got to the final of the champion’s league without a recognised left back- there’ll be someone in the squad who can step up and do the job… what about Vela?

if it does become a real problem at left back id put nasri there if gibbs isnt fit. keep silvestre at CB wid kolo and right back eboue will do enough there, him and thepo linked up well on wednesday.

When and how did Gael develop a stress fracture in his back against Villarreal??

    This injury is mystifying!!

Sagna must have one helluva virus to keep him out of football for a week…the guy is a real warrior.

I’d rather take my chances with a spry and virile Song at CB over the slow and sloppy Silvestre.

Denilson, hopefully he can turn in a great performance…you just now Song has put a fire under his ass :-)

Gibbs is young and should be able to shake off his tweaked groin…I expect him to be ready to go.

I won’t mind too much moving Song to CB since Diaby is now back. We can couple Diaby and Denilson in midfield and put Song on defense. It may not be ideal but I think it is the best temporary fix

how do the loan spells work? Can we recall anyone right now that we have out on loan? If that was the case I’m sure you’d have seen Senderous and Traroe(sp) back by now.

What about our reseves do we have any we can bring up?
